A:Answer First, the author of the answer "16:9 and 4:3" is confusing contrast ratio and aspect ratio. Aspect ration, which is what their answer was about, relates to the "shape" of the picture displayed on the TV (4:3 for SDTV and 16:9 for HDTV). Contrast ratio relates to the difference between shades of black and white (sometimes also referred to as "white levels" or "black levels").
The problem with this whole topic is that there is no industry standard for contrast ratio. So, each manufacturer has their own scale. That being the case, any number they give you cannot be used to compare between TVs of different brands, but is only good for comparing TVs of the same brand.
