If you can't put holes anywhere to secure it, I always take a block of wood to wedge between the top of the window and the bottom of the top sill.

They ARE NECESSARY to keep the window from moving upward (for whatever reason) causing the unit to fall out (hurt people, property, or damage the unit). They guy who installed my unit drilled holes into the window frame to just fit the need of the screw of the L Bracket. It looks fine. I rent too, by the way & my landlord was just happy that I had a way to secure the a/c unit from falling out. Better to have a hole in the window frame that is barely noticeable than possible damage to a person, pet or property). I have added some pics for you to review.
