“Does this TV support the HBOmax app? I know Sony and Samsung support the app but just curious to know if LG does. If not when will LG support this app? I'm torn between buying this TV or the Sony x900h.”

No it does not. Might want to add a firestick. The firestick was offically granted support last fall. So there are devices that does not have offical support for HBO MAX. If the magic remote is used it can control the firestick if configured properly.

However, we are continually working to add the latest streaming applications, such as HBO, but cannot provide a concrete timeline at this time.
