“Gas dryers are supposedly cheaper to run in the long run compared to an electric dryer. I just cannot see how that is possible as my highest gas bill in the winter is three times higher than my highest electric bill in the summer. Any explanations?”

That can be based on where you live, your home, other appliances in the home, etc. You can't blame your total utility bills on just your dryer. Overall, in most places, gas is cheaper than electricity and gas dryers need fewer and less expensive repairs.
