Hi Paul 77, If the DVD you are trying to copy is copy protected, this product will not be able to defeat the copy guard. You'll need some type of 'ripping' software that will rip through the copy guard and send to the Blu-ray/DVD burner. If you are copying a homemade or unprotected DVD that has no security blocks imbedded in the production, you should be able to do a simple copy and burn. The LG unit comes with a 'Media Suite' that lets you play movies of different formats/codecs. I don't use it to copy disc, I have equipment that can duplicate up to 3 Blu-ray's or 12 DVD's per pass. I don't rip protected productions so I can't tell you if this will work for you. Hope this helped.
