The LG 8x External USB Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW Drive - Black, Model # SP80NB80, connects to external devices via its micro USB port and receives its power from the USB port. Chrome OS does not natively support DVD playback. The operating system lacks built-in DVD playback software, and there is no way to play DVDs directly without third-party applications or external DVD drives. While some experimental support for DVD playback may be available in Chrome OS version 69 and later, it is not guaranteed on all devices. Users can connect an external DVD drive or use third-party media players like VLC to enable DVD playback on their Chromebooks. We strongly suggest you contact Samsung to inquire if your Chromebook is compatible with external DVD optical drives. It if is, they should have a list of compatible optical drives...^Ivan.

  • QuestionIs there a power light that remains on during usage? My player starts a CD but than stops about 5 seconds in. I have charged it. Any ideas?

    • Answer The LG 8x External USB Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW Drive - Black, Model # SP80NB80, receives its power from the USB port it is connected to. It does not need to be charged. The drive has an LED Drive activity indicator, that shows when the drive is active. What type of CD disc are you trying to play, and does this happen for every CD you attempt to play? You can try using a CD/DVD lens cleaner to remove any dust or smudges that may be affecting the laser's ability to read the disc...^Ivan. You can check to make sure the CD is clean and not scratched. A dirty or damaged disc can prevent the drive from reading it properly.

    • Answer You can read DVD formatted discs and copy to your computer. In my case, I converted old DVD's of family photo slideshows to mp4 files for saving onto my MacBook, mp4 is a more compact video format. I did need to purchase a low cost application from the App store to make the conversion.
