Ok, I installed my set last night. I placed the sidekick washer under the dryer (LG said it was only designed to go under washer) and it works fine. The unit has no need for the top washer, except the back left corner has a switch that senses the washer (or dryer in my case) is on top to allow it to work. If you placed a weight on there or bypassed it, I don't see any reason it would not work stand alone in dorm/camper, etc.

However LG has designed it with a switch (back, left top corner) that must be depressed for it to operate. Compatible LG washers have a pin at the bottom that will do this automatically. If you're stacking a non LG washer, a dryer, or nothing at all, you will need to find an alternate way to depress the switch. I loosen the screws on the plastic foot retainers, put down some strong duct tape and replaced replace the plastic piece in screws to support the tape. On the install of my 2nd sidekick, I cut a thin piece of plastic and did the same thing. Either of these methods give you a functional washing machine, but likely invalidate LG's warranty - as they specifically say not to utilize their product this way. But if you're contemplating this method instead of buying all the machines that look pretty together. You're probably in for a DIY jerry-rig anyways. :)
