“Do I need 18gbps or 22gbps to get the best picture quality & to upscale/convert dvds & regular blu rays? I'm using this on a Sony 85 inch 4k. I was going to go with the Sony 4k players but I heard they freeze too much & LG has the best & easiest 4k player”

A 22gbps HDMI cable is better than an 18 gbps in terms of performance. Either one will serve great as long as the cable specifies it supports 4k. ^CP
