“Will this router connect to AT&T Basic 6 service (I believe it's DSL, it is NOT u-verse) and provide wifi access for my devices? I to replace a rented gateway from AT&T.”

Hi, kenh. It should work since our Linksys routers are compatible to major ISPs.
