It should be placed halfway between your router and your dead Wifi area. In set up it has a spot finder- this helps finding the optimal placement. I run my Wifi off of my family’s next door and it is seamless now. My upstairs had terrible dead zones and now no issues.

The best method to use would vary depending upon the user's current set-up. So, yes, the RE9000 can utilize an Ethernet connection. Where to locate the access point? In theory, it should be located such that uniform/acceptable Wi-Fi signal strength is maintained throughout.
