We have a multilevel home too. Downstairs you will find cathedral ceilings. Insulated walls and thick carpet. So there is some distance involved here. I have not had any problems whatsoever. Not one dropped connection. No one has had any problem maintaining a connection.

As a test if you can see any of your neighboring wifi connections then you have a really good chance of seeing your new one.

If you can put it in the center of the house, you'll get better results. Remember that these routers have about a 300 ft circumference, so measure 300ft out in any direction, and that's the coverage area . The more walls it has to go through, the quicker the signal strength is going to go down.
