Steve probably has this answered by now, but I would like to add my feedback. When using this device I lose 4K ability. I have a 4K, 120hz lg monitor with 2.1 hdmi. It drops to 1080p/120 hz when I use this pass through extractor. So disappointing.

The previous response, to me, sounded like it only answered the part of your question about plugging your headset direct to the controller. I was real irritated when I learned about this product being needed because when the PS5 pre-orders were announced I went to Astro's site to find out if the A40TR and Mixamp would work. Everything they put up said it would work, so I stayed comfortable in my delusion that it would be a seamless switch... Found out a few days ago from a friend that this audio extractor was going to be needed, and now you cant find one to save your life.... Below is a quote from Astro's blog from around the time they started selling the extractor (included a link as well). If you put this inline, I do not believe you will achieve 4K 120Hz (even if you swap the supplied HDMI 2.0b cable). While the situation is irritating, they have a point in they're response about the cost factor vs. the actual real "need" for those resolutions utilizing the 120Hz... I'm also looking into an aftermarket pass through/extractor similar to what they recommended when the PS4 Slim launched without the Optical port. Also, I'm awaiting a response about possibly using the optical out supplied on my TV as an alternative... Good luck and Happy Gaming!! HDMI 2.0b Pass-through Max Resolution: 4k Max 4k Frame Rate: 60Hz HDR: Yes HDCP Certified: Yes HDMI Certified: Yes "For those living on the cutting edge of display tech: We opted for HDMI 2.0b for this adapter because 2.0b covers the majority of users and their hardware going into this next generation of consoles – there are very few 8k TVs in the market at this time and the PlayStation 5 is limited in resolution when set to play games at 120hz. To include HDMI 2.1 would have doubled the cost of the adapter while only being relevant in a minority of use cases." https://blog.astrogaming.com/2020/10/astro-hdmi-audio-adapter-for-playstation-5/

The HDMI Adapter is basically a pass-trough adapter (adding in an extra channel for for the optical port), so you won't lose the 4K/120 capability of your PS5 and TV no. Also, you won't lose any quality in sound per say by using the A40 TR without the MixAmp, but you won't have the full Dolby Surround nor EQ profiles that the MixAmp provides you with, on top of the Game/Voice balance. So if you want to get the best possible sound experience with your PS5, I would definitely recommend using the HDMI Adapter with your A40 TR with MixAmp.
