You can change the function of a button to match the features you are looking for, but the remote will function for one zone or the other using the main controls. But, you can tell it to use, the channel button, for example, as a volume control for zone-2. It's odd, but zone-1 would be volume, zone-2 would be channel. That's assuming you don't need channel control while using the second zone.
