“Currently in my 2011 Macbook Air I have a memory card in an adapter that makes it flush with the case. I use this to add storage to the macbook. Is there also an adapter to do the same thing on this new MacBook Air?”

No. Only 2 USB ports on the left and headphone port on the right.
