You can think of it as the heart of the system that allows it to work. With regard to the MacBook Pro, its operating system is built on the Berkley distribution of Unix. Steve Jobs, when building his NeXT computer line adopted Unix as the core. When NeXT was absorbed back into Apple, this new operating system, OS X, became the core for the new line(s) of Mac computers. Consequently, MacBooks, iPads, AppleWatchs, and Mac desktops are all based on Berkley Unix with many enhancements over the years. I hope this helps.
