You can have it as close as you want (within reason). Being closer will just make the bass more boomy. About 8-12" away should be good. Some may say 12-24 inches, but around 12 ive found is good.

There are no special requirements for how much depth is needed from the back of the speaker to the wall. While the speaker may perform/sound differently depending on the speaker placement and room, the speaker will still function as it should at that depth.
