The case lid and ear buds are secured in place with small magnets. Although it's not advised to hold / shake the case while upside down, the headphones should be secured by both the lid magnet as well as the smaller magnets that hold the individual ear buds- even if the lid were to be open.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I can't tell if they are magnetically held down, they sort of slip/click into place in their slot in their case. I can hold the case upside down, lid open, and shake it a bit and they will not fall out. I hope this helps.
