You can put the back of the the washer up against the wall. The 33 inches is from the lower bottom on the back of the washer to the front. There is a hump in the lower bottom of the back of the washer that tapers to a flat back near the top of the washer. This give a small area that you can route your water lines or accommodate hot and cold valves on the wall.
