“Is there no way to control the size of the load? If I want to wash a single shirt is the wash time the same as if I was washing a full load? We just purchased this machine and this has been bothering us! Thanks!”

We just got our Maytag front loader a week ago. I wondered about the same thing. I finally decided that the washer can measure how much water it takes to get the clothes in washer load wet. From that information the washer can tell how big the load of clothes is and adjust the total water level. I'm not sure I'm right on this but the washer uses so much less than our old top loader that I decided to not think about it anymore.
