Yes you can leave it in pause mode and the water will not drain out.. Make sure you wait until the machine finishes filling up with water at the beginning of the wash cycle then hit the pause button do not open the lid. I walked away and returned the following morning and all the water was still in the machine I hit the pause button again and washer continued the cycle where it left off .... Hope this helps .
