• Yes. You may have to open the laptop on Start Up or Re-Start.

• Yes, it's totally possible. If you have problems while doing it, you can just set your surface laptop to not go to sleep when the lid is closed. It's in the power settings of the windows desktop environment. Source: have done this myself many many times.
