• It plugs into the same port that you power adapter for your Surface plugs into. That port does can connect other things besides power alone.

• plugs into wall and then plugs into charging port on surface. There is no USB connection to the Surface itself.

• I have a surface book 2. The docking station replaces the power supply for my surface book 2. I use the original power supply as a spare when traveling. Bottom line you will have an extra power supply.
