“What is the actual model on this? I bought one of these tonight as a gift and haven't opened it. The box says "Model 1796" on the back. Searching on that model number reveals this to be a low end 5th Gen, not 6th. Which is it Best Buy?”

They have changed the description to the correct verbiage. It now just says Surface Pro instead of Surface Pro 6. This is actually a 5th Gen Surface Pro.

I think it's just the base model Surface Pro 5 that they call this now to intentionally obfuscate the fact you're buying last year's model. Let alone the fact that they were advertising it as a 6 up until a few hours ago.

It can very well be pro3 ?? Who knows. The best buy ad everywhere including on best buy website says it is pro6. What is the verdict best buy. Did u really sell me a pro 6 or is it a older model. The chip seems to be very unique for best buy not available on Microsoft site. However they do now have for black Friday sale starting nov21 a similar bundle in pro 5 for $599.
