“wacthing DVD I installed window 8.1 i can't get it to show a picture when i play my home made movies' is there some other software needed. (the window media player will start up but only with sound) if so what kind. I would also like to wacth DVD's”

Do and internet search on VLC Media Player which is a free software to play multiple video formats such as DVD. Read what it can do and consider using it.

I spent a considerable amount of time trying to troubleshoot my dvd drive thinking it was faulty before I stumbled upon this little fact.
