You can go directly to 8.1, but neither 8.0 nor 8.1 will let you do an in-place upgrade from XP (nor Vista). So you are going to have to do a "clean install", which means reinstalling your software and reconfiguring any custom settings you had made. You may want to ensure you have the latest version of word, because the older 2002 version is not supported by 8.1

I just upgraded a month ago from windows 7pro, 32 bit, and went right up to Windows 8.1 home, 64bit. everything is included in the install discs or online when you install. Enjoy. Windows 8 is awesome
