just a different d pad. works best for fighting games and being able to execute diagonal motion more easily

The controller comes with both options. I have found the round dead to be a bit more precise when selecting from menus and such in games

It is shaped that way to provide more movement combos. Some games have more movement options than just up, down, left, right. The shape allows for better combo moves.
