• just a different d pad. works best for fighting games and being able to execute diagonal motion more easily

• The controller comes with both options. I have found the round dead to be a bit more precise when selecting from menus and such in games

• It is shaped that way to provide more movement combos. Some games have more movement options than just up, down, left, right. The shape allows for better combo moves.
