No, it works with headsets as well. I use a TurtleBeach wireless and it works great!

Original one is called: "Wireless Controller Adapter for Windows devices" is a long adapter with a sync button on the side was released in 2015 packaged in a green colored box. That version has been discontinued and few places sells them. Newer version released in 2018 is called: "Wireless Adapter for Windows 10". The newer adapter is 60 percent shorter and smaller than the original with a bigger sync button at the top and it is packaged in a white box. Former mentioned adapter does not work with headsets, the latter (2018 released adapter) with its smaller size allows players to sync Xbox wireless headsets to work with the adapter.
