This model (the 55) does not need an activation code. I think only the 20 (?) might. I needed an additional cord (HDMI to Lightning) to connect this to my MacBook (which was $50) but other than that it connected and worked right away with no issues. For this model the room needs to be pretty dark. I used it on a 50" projection screen and it was a clear picture, just hard to see if not pretty dark.
