This product is only a modem. In order to have Wi-Fi, you need a router, which you can buy separately or you can use the one supplied by Comcast. It doesn’t make sense to me to use the Comcast product, as it is a combined modem and router. Since I am using my Apple Time Capsule for my router, I was able to get rid of my Comcast modem/router, for which I was being charged $11 per month plus tax, and instead purchased this handy little modem to provide the modem functionality. I then connected this modem to both my time capsule router and my Ooma VoIP telephone device. I then connected the Ooma to my telephone. So I have cut the cord as much as possible. I am paying only for my Internet, which I get from Comcast. I don’t have to have a landline for my telephone because I am using VoIP via the Ooma device. My existing router sends Wi-Fi to my computers, my tablet, my iPhone, and my Roku device for streaming TV. Woo hoo, I love it!! Just realize that if your Internet goes out, nothing works, including the VoIP telephone. It’s one of the reasons why I also have a cell phone, as that is not dependent on Wi-Fi. I can turn on my cell phone settings and use it like a normal cell phone within the house. So to answer what I think is really your question, if you buy this modem, you should buy a separate router and get rid of any Comcast modem or router. You will more than make up for the cost of the two items by not having to pay Comcast the monthly rental fee plus tax, assuming you plan to stay with Comcast for a while. Just compare what you are paying to Comcast and how long it would take you to rent from them compared to purchasing your own equipment. FYI, my brother (who is a computer nerd) recommended to me that I buy the modem separately from a combined modem router device from anyone, such as Best Buy or Amazon. His reasoning was that the updates that take place within the router world and the modem world happen on different schedules and it makes more sense to update only one device when that is actually really needed. Also, I recommend purchasing locally, because if something doesn’t work it is much easier to return and get a different model or a replacement of the same model from a place like Best Buy, as compared to Amazon. I buy a lot from Amazon, but not electronics for this very reason. Just be aware that Best Buy has a very short return window. I think it is around 15 days. I hope this answer helps!
