I was able to take the sim card out of my old moto g7 and put it into my new moto e without a problem. I assume it would be the same with a moto g6 play.

I am not very tech knowledgeable I trusted the representative at Best Buy for help my old phone was att Android and I was able to take simm card out and put into Motorola e phone and it works I was able to transfer photos from old phone first to computer since my phone was really damaged and unable to transfer to new phone if that helps you
