This phone is and will be perfectly capable of running Android O, however, it is Lenovo (who own the Motorola Mobile brand) who has to "convert" the version of Android and release it as part of an update. Unfortunately both Motorola and Lenovo don't have very good track record for updating their products, having said that, the phone is unlocked, when the time comes you should be able to install one of the many after market android versions out there.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Having experience with the MOTO G4, The G4 Operating System was updated two to three months after Nougat was released. I would expect a similar time frame for a Moto G5 Android Update. PS: My carrier is T-Moblie (in case that makes any difference).
