GSM phones "speak" a different language than CDMA phones, hence GSM phones can not be use on a CDMA network such as Verizon. The first letter in GSM stands for the word "global" so a GSM phones can be use with the local SIM card purchases around the world. GSM phones can support multiple frequencies and most modern GSM smart phones support them. However, earlier GSM and "pay-as-you-go" type of GSM phones may support two or three of these bandwidths and not all GSM frequencies. Regarding CDMA phones, they are strictly CDMA and they won't work with GSM network. However, high end CDMA phones will have a second set of RF equipment to support GSM. Verizon uses CDMA protocol but their phone may or may not have a SIM card slot. Verizon includes the second set of RF equipment to support customers when they are traveling to area around the world where there is no CDMA and plenty of GSM network. 4G LTE is a standard where VoIP packages are xmit over cellular network. It support both GSM and CDMA and requires more modern hardware than the older 3G hardware. However, the GSM and CDMA protocol (or language) are use to xmit the VoIP packages, hence the GSM/CDMA rules described above still hold. In summary, some CDMA phones (with SIM card slot) will support both CDMA and GSM protocols. However, GSM phones do not support CDMA protocol. This is my understanding but I can be wrong so please check the facts by simply "Google" them.
