40’ is the length of the “rope”(end to end, what actually crosses your roof line), and 90’ is the combined “total” length(adding in the drop length of each strand).
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The length from the first icicle branch to the last icicle branch is 29 feet. The length of the cord leading to the first branch is quite long and then the wall AC plug and controller section of the cord provides additional length. Where some light sets give you just a short unlighted portion of the cord, Mr. Christmas provides plenty of cord. One other comment is the light set is not a string to string. Multiple sets will need to be plugged in separately, but the generous amount of cord before the first icicle branch should be helpful.

I can add a pic that i hope helps; i strung my lights back & forth across the top of a headboard the width of a queen size bed until i used the entire length. See pic for result...
