“Would this work with an i9 9900k out of the box or does it need an update”

• It should work out of the box, it's for 8th and 9th gen. It worked with my i5 9600k out of the box

• The CPU model is listed in the manufacturer's specs but I am not sure what you mean by needing an update. The only thing I would look at is to make sure you have a sufficient size power supply to handle all of the power requirements (minimum 750W).
