A:Answer In my experience the NETGEAR CM600 will automatically assign 192.168.1.1 to whatever device is plugged in to its LAN port. As to why someone would want to change this, one reason would be because you want to set up a VPN server so you can remote back to your home network while you're away. In this case the IP address ranges at both locations must be different so they don't conflict. Considering the typical home network is 192.168.1.x, they would conflict. To the other poster who responded: just because your limited knowledge of networking doesn't allow you to understand nerdish2's question, doesn't mean it is a bad question.
