• You do need a service provider for this to work. Mine is our Cable/internet provider. I did have to call them when I bought this so they could set it up on their end after I installed it. It will have paid for itself in under a year by not having modem rental fees.

• You can use this modem with any Internet Service Provider (ISP) supplying you with cable internet to avoid paying rental fees.

• You're almost asking the same question. You do need a cable/ISP to get the connection to work with the device. Use your existing ISP if you have one but remember to tell them about your device so it'll work.
