your internet service provider usually provides modem. some companys ( comcast ) charge you a monthy fee for the equipment ( usually 10 per month ). check with your ISP, to see if they charge you. you connect the router to the cable modem, and than follow directions to get connected. so yes you do need a modem, either provided by ISP or you can purchase one from BestBuy

Please try again later.Only if your internet service is on DSL (looks like a coaxial cable or a cable that you used to plug into your tv 20 years ago) then your internet provider should have provided you with a modem. the coaxial cable would go into the modem. And then you would hook this router up to the modem with a CAT5 Ethernet cable.
