• Yes it does hook up to a modem. I had an N600 wireless router and this unit easily doubles the range.

• NETGEAR R6400 AC1750 ROUTER does hook up to the modem. My current apartment is built with cement plank ceilings and exterior walls, so my range is about 40 feet.
