No, I don't think so. Speed is rarely dependent upon the modem; rather, it is mostly dependent upon the quality of the line bringing in the ADSL signal AND the number of users on the switch or router at the telco office. Yet, modems can be damaged by voltage surges as well as overheating in poorly ventilated areas. If in doubt, try another modem. The Netgear modem is inexpensive enough to keep on hand as a spare, but you will need a router with it.
