I haven't set up any port-forwarding for the base station (or the other Arlo cameras that have their own IP address). I believe the base station works on a push model, where it contacts the Netgear cloud servers, so only out-going IP connection initiation is required. What this means is that all video goes through the Netgear systems, but that provides the convenience of accessing the camera feeds without the need to open holes on your firewall.
