1. No, your router does not have to be Mesh; mine is not and the Extender works great. 2. No, you do not need to plug an ethernet cable from modem to the extender. In fact, all you have to do is plug the extender into a 110 electrical plug just a little distance away from the weakest area. In other words, just a little distance away from the area you want the wifi signal improvement and follow the instructions on the app you download to your smart phone. Where you plug in the Extender, therefore, does NOT have to be near the router...........just near the weak-signal area.

The Ethernet is not necessary but I am using the Ethernet from the extender to the back of my PS4. My modem and router are both upstairs and I have the extender plugged into a battery back up/ surge protector. Hopefully these answers help. I will say I did have a little trouble reconnecting it after I unplugged my modem to reset it
