• I assume that you intend to perform tethering between your smart phone and your laptop, using your data plan. If you do that, you won't need a router and won't need a modem. Your phone serves as a wifi hotspot. In order to enable tethering, you must register that fact with your cell phone carrier and there may be an associated cost. T-Mobile has free tethering but other carriers such as Sprint, Verizon and AT&T is not free. Contact your cell phone plan provider to determine if there is an extra cost. Depending on the carrier, additional equipment may be required to provide the level of service that you require.

• Yes you need a modem if you want wifi in your home. If you just use your cell phone and data plan then no but if you want wifi you will need a modem and internet service from a internet company like Comcast or ATT
