• No, this device works best if it is away from your router. It connects through WiFi to your router and extends your network from there.

• You can hook this up via an Ethernet cable but you don't have to. I have mine wireless to run my playstation 4 and it is neither plugged into the router or the ps4. Everything is wireless.

• Hi Sam, Only for setting it up. You can use WPS but you may have issues. I used ethernet for set up after struggling a little with WPS. Very straightforward set up.
