You do not have to use the 5G. There is an option in the settings to just use the 2.4G. As far as a modem, I would highly suggest you go to or call your internet service provider for a list of compatible modem's. They have a list of specific models based on the speeds your running. (This list includes aftermarket models). Netgear makes some pretty decent wifi extenders and you can usually find them on sale. They can usually run both 5G and/or 2.4G. Once again just adjust in the settings.
