“I have a shop a small distance from out house. We already have one of these routers, and most times, I can get internet in the shop. Can I add another one of these, in between the first and my shop, and extend the network? If not, is there another way”

Yes, and the menu built into the router has a page setup for exactly that. You can use your old router as an access point. Works best if you run a network cable to where the 2nd router will be placed. If you do get an extender instead. Remember it will only extend the signal quality is receives. The further you place an extender from a source, the weaker a signal you are extending. so don't go to far !
