“Do these hook into your existing wi-fi connection? I have wi-fi but because of where I live it is terribly slow so looking for something to help with that. Thanks.”

Why is your wifi slow? If internet access is slow from the router to an internet destination, then the Orbi will not solve the problem. Upgrade the bandwidth of your internet service. For example from 20Mps to 100mps. Some ISPs offer up to 2,000mps (2gps). If internet service speed is good then Orbi will provide just about as good as you can get wifi service.
