In my experience, extenders are not necessary with the Orbi 970 series. The mesh WiFi with this system is able to connect with my Google Nest cameras and doorbell with no extender. One of my outdoor cameras is located approximately 40 feet from the router base unit and it has no problem staying connected to the WiFi network.
