It depends on a number of factors, but using the color-coded LED light rings on the tops of the satellites will help you optimize placement. You can find instructions for this starting on page 17 of the User Manual: https://www.netgear.com/support/product/rbk43.aspx#docs
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. There is no rule of thumb on feet. You only want to use the satellites to boost the signal in areas that have weak signal or areas that could use a wired network port. So if your home has great wifi signal all over from the main unit and you don't have desktops or high bandwidth devices that need a wired connection you don't need the satellites. If however you have an entertainment center which supports streaming I would put a satellite there for the wired ethernet connection. If you have a garage or basement with low signal I would put the satellite reciever halfway between the main unit and the weak areas. If you have a basement, and a house with two level I would put the main unit on the first floor and the two satellites on the other two floors directly above and below the main unit. If you have an outdoor area such as a pool or backyard you need wifi I would put the satellite outside but as close to the main unit as possible while still being in an area sheltered from the weather.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. What I've found to be the best way is to rely on the instructions. you essentially walk out away form the main router, and the top of the unit will turn a color to let you know it's met its end range for best transmission... I'd say you have about a 10 ft X 10 ft space after that notification to find a home for it... repeat for second satelite and you should be good to go.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I put one on each floor of my house and moved The perhaps 50 or so feet from there got instant blue signal. check out the results after December purchase from my upstairs bedroom, from double to triple digits!
