I would recommend using the apple airport. They seem to work together better when you have apple products. I had a netgear and the performance was poor I switched to airport router and it was 10x better

Any router with the 802.11ac specification would be good specially for new devices that support that standard. Otherwise if you have a router with the 802.11n specification it would suffice too. By the way the 802.11 standards are printed right on the box so you can't miss it.
