Hello, I currently have this connected to my NetGear router wirelessly as a access point and connected two Ethernet ports to devices that monitor and control my garage doors wirelessly. I did it for the same reason not to have to run a network cable from the second floor to the first floor. I don't see any reason why this would not work. The access point acts as an extension to your current network and uses SSID for security. Regards,
